The Fila Brasileiro, being a native of Brazil, traces back to Portuguese herding dogs (which were brought to Brazil in colonial times), English Mastiffs, ancient Bulldogs, and the Bloodhounds. The Fila is an unsurpassed guardian of home and their owners, as well as cattle driver, and jaguar hunter. The Filas are loyal and eager to please ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARBA, FBCA, SKC, CH EANLOS FISHERKING OF WINDWALKER, TT, CGC OFA # FIB-193G26M ____________________________________________________________ ORTHOPEDIC FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS (OFA). OFA certification for Hip Dysplasia is so important in the Fila breed. I have had 18.5 Fila's X-rayed by my local Vet and he has missed on three (3) of them. Had I taken his advise, these dogs never would have achieved their OFA Certification. My Vet is the first to admit that he does not have the knowledge base to accurately read Hip X-rays of the Fila's and that you should use OFA, Penn-Hip, or a Certified Radiologist. To give you an idea of the seriousness of Hip & Elbow Dysplasia in our breed, in 2007, we had a 44.4% incidence of Hip Dysplasia in the Filas (one out of two and a half) and a 50.0 % incidence of Elbow Dysplasia, in Filas (one out of two). What's also sad is that only 5 Filas have been Certified in the first 2 Quarters of 2008. Do not be fooled by breeders who read their own X-rays. Also, are "Local Vets" qualified to determine Hip or Elbow Dysplasia vs. a Certified Radiologist (or as in the case of Permanent OFA Certification, a panel of three (3) Certified Radiologists who decide if a dog is Dysplastic or not. Hip or Elbow Dysplasia is very seldom visible to to eye unless it's in advanced stages. Penn-HIP also evaluates Hip Dysplasia in dogs by a different procedure, but they DO NOT EVALUATE Elbows, so if the dog in question is Penn-HIP Evaluated, but does not have an OFA Certificate or Prelim Letter on the Elbows (under 24 months), there is a good chance that the dog has Elbow Dysplasia, after all, with the seriousness of Elbow Dysplasia in our breed, why would someone go to the trouble of OFA'g or Penn-HIP'g a dogs Hips and ignoring the Elbows which were worse than Hip Dysplasia in our Filas again this last year. Also, if a dog fails Hip or Elbows Pre-liming or Certification process, the results more than likely will not be shown or mentioned by the breeder. Hip & Elbow Dysplasia is a disease for the buyer, as you get stuck with the bill, not the breeder. If you come to my place, I will show you the good and not-so-good Xrays from Filas evaluated over the 20 years that I have been involved with Filas. ________________________________________________________The Fila
